Gas Permeable Contact Lenses in Doral

What Are Gas Permeable Lenses?
Gas permeable (RGP) lenses are rigid contact lenses made from a material that lets oxygen pass through to the cornea.
Because they keep their shape on the eye, they can provide sharp vision in certain cases, including some corneas with irregular curvature.
How Do They Work?
A rigid lens holds its curvature. A thin tear layer forms between the lens and the cornea, helping smooth out some irregularities of the corneal surface.
The result is a more regular optical surface in front of the eye. The fitting aims to balance vision, comfort and eye health.
Soft vs. Gas Permeable: General Differences
Each type has different uses; neither is better for everyone.
| Soft vs. Gas Permeable: General Differences | Soft lenses | Gas permeable |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Flexible, contains water | Rigid, oxygen permeable |
| Conceptual size | Slightly larger than the cornea | Smaller, sits on the cornea |
| Adaptation | Usually quick | May need an adjustment period |
| Applications | Everyday vision correction | Astigmatism and certain irregular corneas, among others |
General comparison for reference. The right option is decided during an exam.
Who May Be Evaluated?

What to Expect
Because they're rigid, it's common to feel the lens during the first few days. Over time, many people get used to them, though experiences vary. Follow-up visits review fit and comfort.
