By Dr. Belkis Perez, OD · Published

Close-up of an eye

Blurry vision is most often caused by refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia, but it can also relate to dry eye or other conditions. Sudden blurry vision is an emergency.

Common causes

Refractive errors, presbyopia after 40, dry eye, cataracts, and diabetes-related changes are frequent causes evaluated in a comprehensive exam.

Warning signs

Sudden vision loss, flashes, a curtain over your vision, severe pain, or blurriness after an injury require immediate emergency care.
