Dry Eye in Miami: Causes, Symptoms, and When to See an Optometrist in Doral

Dry eye happens when tears don't properly lubricate the surface of the eye, either because too few are made or because they evaporate too quickly. It causes burning, a gritty feeling, redness, fluctuating vision, and even excessive watering. It is very common and usually mild, but an exam helps identify the cause and choose the right management.

Common dry eye symptoms

The most common are burning or itching, a foreign-body sensation, red eyes, blurry vision that clears with blinking, light sensitivity, and contact lens discomfort. Paradoxically, dry eye can also cause watering, because an irritated eye produces lower-quality reflex tears.

Everyday triggers in Miami

Even though Miami's climate is humid, much of the day is spent indoors in air conditioning, which dries the air. According to the National Eye Institute, dry or windy air, long screen time (we blink less), contact lenses, age, some medications, hormonal changes, and certain health conditions all contribute to dry eye. Meibomian gland dysfunction, which affects the oily layer of the tear film, is a frequent cause.

What you can do at home

Taking screen breaks (the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), blinking consciously, keeping AC vents away from your face, staying hydrated, and using preservative-free artificial tears can ease mild symptoms. If you wear contact lenses, follow the recommended wear and replacement schedule.

When to get evaluated

If symptoms last more than a few days, interfere with reading, work, or contact lens wear, or don't improve with artificial tears, an exam is a good idea. Your optometrist evaluates the eye surface, tear quality, and eyelids to recommend management based on the cause. For severe eye pain, vision loss, or marked light sensitivity, seek care right away.
